Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) was originally developed for children with autism to improve their communication skills (Bondy and Frost, 1994). It is specifically designed for the children to communicate with picture cards but with little or no spoken language and is a specific, manualised intervention.

Children are taught the approach with the aim of them giving a picture of a desired item to a communicative partner in exchange for that item. Children can then initiates a communicative act for a given concrete item within a social context. This means children use pictures to start an interaction and to get what they need from others.
